Before the latest change the California Lotto was a 6-of-51 game.
Since September 30, 1987 drawings are held twice a week on Wednesday and Saturday evening at 7:57p.m. (PT). Deadline for on-line orders through I.M.I. is 2:00p.m. (ET) Wednesday and Friday.
You pick five numbers between 1 and 47 plus the "Mega Number" from 1 to 27.
Players now can win ion nine prize categories. This creates overall odds of 1 in 23 for
winning one of the nine prizes. The odds of winning the jackpot are approximately 1 in 41
million.
All prizes are pari-mutuel, that is they depend on the number of dollars wagered and the number of winners for each category. The minimum jackpot is estimated at $7 million. See prize structure for more details and odds. The jackpot is paid as a 26 year annuity or as cash prize (approximately 50% of the estimated jackpot, less taxes). Winning tickets are valid for 180 days.
51.5% of the cost of each ticket go into the prize pool (50% of the prize pool is
allocated for the jackpot), 34% go towards education in California.
